Statement for the Eye is not a Camera Feb 2012

The pieces I show at “the Eye is not a Camera” are examples of my current work for interior spaces that can take advantage of the scale of the Sprinkler Factory Gallery.

In “Basic Urge” I illustrate the constancy through millennia of the human desire for self expression and the individuals’ needs to leave records of their passing existence.

The layering of flows, as seen for example in rock formations, provides a record of the passage of time. With “Colorfall” I use color to emphasize these layers and the associated flow of time; as well as accentuate the innate exuberance of the foam material, which I find difficult to suppress.

As we hone our understanding of the origins of matter and even the dimension of time, it becomes ever more difficult to envision these origins. Matter, forces, and the very dimensions of space and time may have burst into existence in a random expansion from an initial source. “Beginnings” is a vision of what was un-seeable; the scale it depicts might range from sub-atomic to astronomical.

I hope “Private Space” gives pause to consider that each individual has its own private identity, an intimate subtlety and complexity seldom viewed, and frequently under-estimated, by others.
